Saint Aidan's Youth News

St. Aidan's Youth Group offers a space for young people to explore their own faith, have a place in the Church community, have fun with friends and grow in the love of God.

StAR*Youth

4:12 & Momentum have concluded until Sunday 7th February 2010. Fusion has concluded for the year and resumes on Friday 5 February 2010. Parachute is the next big event for us. See you there! — Dave

Well, it's been a pretty flat out couple of months here as the youth pastor at St Aidan's. Above all, the youth and I have had heaps of fun. There have been heaps of the youth involved in different things on different occasions. The older ‘leaders' have helped out heaps, to their credit, volunteering at the Garage Sale and Light Party, and helping lead other youth group activities such as Fusion youth group on Friday nights and the Auckland City Mission Cook off.

The ‘Auckland City Mission Cook Off' was a great success, where a group of us met here at the Church on a weekday afternoon during the school holidays to do some cooking which could be frozen and donated to the Auckland City Mission. It was great fun, a big mess was made, but most importantly, 21 lasagne casseroles were also made for donation to the ACM.

We have joined forces on a couple of occasions with Remuera Baptist Church recently. The first was the

very successful evening of Laserstrike, in Panmure. There were some outstanding Laserstrikers, and all had heaps of fun. Our Baptist cousins from down the road also joined us for both the recent Hollywood Celebrities night at youth group, where attendants were required to attend dressed as their favourite Hollywood celebrity. It goes without saying that many of us looked ridiculous, but the evening, especially the drama performances at the end were awesome. Finally, a week or two ago, when the famous magician Peter ‘Abracadabra' Cleland joined us to show us a few tricks of the trade, the Remuera Baptist youth group also joined in as Peter is a member of their parish. Some of our youth demonstrated some of their own magical skills, which were all very impressive.

Dave and Richard Lee line up another unsuspecting victim at Laserstrike.

And although the quiz night was only attended by a few due to school exams and other things on, it was a favourite of mine, Steph and Henry Hawkin's both prepared and delivered some exciting and challenging rounds of questions to vex the brains of our youth. Ricardo Lee and Nic Mercer were the champs on the night, and took home the chocolate filled coffee cups!

Finally, early in the term we had a great time out rock climbing at ‘the Edge' in Panmure, and this was a popular event. No one fell off, and no one broke anything! Phew!

Fusion youth group wraps up in just a couple of weeks for the year. For those of you in this group, keep an eye out for the 2010 Term 1 plan which will be out in January. Kia ora, Dave

Introducing Dave Finn

In July this year, upon the departure of Julian Latimer—Youth Pastor, I was very grateful to be awarded the position of Youth Pastor and Communications Co-ordinator here at St Aidan's. It was a bit of a step into the unknown for me, a ‘leap of faith' if you like, coming from a varied background in primary school teaching, logistics and hospitality. However, thanks to the awesome team here the transition has been super comfortable, and Jo, Craig and everyone else have been very supportive and helpful. I'm enjoying

developing relationships with everyone here in the St Aidan's community, particularly the youth, with whom I am working quite closely in various ways, and in whom I can see huge potential.

I'm thankful too for the recent addition to our community of Becky Duncan, (pictured right) who has

moved to St Aidan's from Mt Albert Baptist, bringing with her a wealth of experience in working with youth and young adults. Becky will be assisting me with the youth group programs.

What's happening with the youth?

Fusion— As well as eating heaps of pizza, the Friday night ‘Fusion' youth group has been having heaps of fun with games and activities, and the evening is generally concluded with a popular all in game of indoor soccer. Parents are very welcome to join in this kick about too, at the end of the night, and a couple of them regularly do! The ‘Fusion' youth group is aimed at being a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all involved, and is a great place for our established youth to bring their friends for a wee peek at St Aidan's.

here at St Aidan's and it is hoped that the whole youth group will attend a Socket/Rocket evening this Friday—a youth worship and leadership workshop.

Hospital Escorts— On Saturday 16 August a handful of the youth crew travelled to Auckland Hospital to assist patients by wheel chair to and from their wards to the Hospital Chapel for a Sunday morning service. Anna Brown took Dave, Izzy, Morgan and Michael, and we met Jeny Terrel and David Jamison at the hospital. A number of patients were very thankful to have the assistance and opportunity to attend the Chapel service.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome to St Aidan's. If you would like to know about, help with, or have some ideas for youth ministry at St Aidans' - give me a call!

Dave
